iLok2's have a history of not playing nicely with USB3 ports and the general advice is to get a USB 2 hub, plug the iLok into that and the hub into the computer. Unfortunately ram is no longer user replaceable on current Mac laptops.Īlmost forgot - you're going to need an iLok2 dongle to hold the PT authorization. PT wants to see a minimum of 8 gig ram to run comfortably more is better (yo can never have too much ram). Pro Tools 8 LE is also ancient, there are lots of great changes in Pro Tools since then. Was arguably the worst OS X release in a long time, and the last OS X release I'd waste time running with Pro Tools. Something you didn't mention are your computer specs - how much ram, cpu, etc. And El Capitan is a pretty crappy release for many DAWs. LaCie makes some good drives in both types. Anything that's non-green (energy saving) and either an ssd or spinner that's a minimum of 7200 rpm on a USB3 or Thunderbolt connection will work. Something you're going to need is a separate hard drive for PT to record to. Something else with plugins that you'll find - some are what they call 'character plugins' that do fascinating things with the sound and some play it straight. There's one that has an excellent policy and that's Stillwell - their plugins are fully functional with no time limit if you like the plugin and use them on a regular basis then you pay for them and they're not that expensive. Some trials are limited function, some not and that depends on the developer.

There's plenty of developers out there that make excellent products and a lot also offer free trials. But if you're looking for third party stuff I'd say get a good eq and compressor and eventually you can build from there. Plugins - there's the basics that come with PT and are good enough to get you started. It is unlikely that Avid will fix this for PT v11.3.x.

The advice for newbies used to be getting the combo of PT and the 11 Rack (which is an interface targeted towards guitarists but also eminently usable for regular recordists) but not so much anymore considering Avid hasn't updated the drivers and such to work properly with ElCapitan. Im on a 2015 Macbook Pro, El Capitan 10.11.2, running PT 11.3.2 Use drag-and-drop instead of the Import command. There are plenty of excellent interfaces out there. IOW what's the best for me may not be the best for you. The best interface depends on a lot of things - budget, number of channels in and out that you need or can forsee needing, etc. Right now you don't need or want the HD version. You can only buy one version of PT and that's PT12. My questions are: which version pro tools to buy, whats the best interface to buy, plugins, etc? Thanks. I NEED help on which route to go on getting any version of pro tools that will work with my version laptop. I purchase this laptop hoping to run pro tools on it, not knowing anything about capabilities until now. I've already tried to reinstall Pro Tools 10 but El Capitan won't accept the installer on it's OS.I just recently purchased a brand new MacBook Pro which came with OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.3. Unfortunately I was an idiot in not setting up a Time Machine anyway. Staying in the middle with old PT12 on an old OSX10.11 seems kinda pointless, I think. If you feel you really need PT12 or higher, for AAX or other functions, might as well go all the way to current version and modern OS/hardware.

Then install PT and keep it just for PT, and get a modern mac for everything else. I'd say, start from scratch and install a good version OSX for PT10 10.6, 10.7, or 10.8. Some people had it working on 10.9, and some on 10.10 with glitches (like popup of inserts not showing until you mouse-over).

To the OP PT10 was supported up to OSX 10.8.5. I never had a complete restore from TM work good. After that import old data, except Pro Tools!!!!, to your El Cap System.

I had a customer and we only could fix a similar problem with installing Snow Leopard, then Pro tools 10.3.10 and then upgrade to El Cap. If possible please do a reinstall from your Time Machine Backup from the point when everything worked.
